During the hurricane season, motor vehicles are particularly vulnerable to damage from high winds, flying debris, and flooding.  It is, therefore, crucial to take proactive measures to secure your vehicle and minimise potential damage.

Here are five safety tips from JN General Insurance to help safeguard your valuable assets during a hurricane:

1. Park in a secured area, such as a carport, to protect your vehicle from flying debris. If you do not have a carport, park away from trees, powerlines and structures that may collapse during strong winds. Also, avoid parking in flood-prone areas.

2. Turn the wheels towards the curb, if you must park on the road, to reduce the risk of your vehicle being moved by strong winds, minor flooding or becoming a hazard to other vehicles or property. This can be especially important on sloped roads.

3. Use a car cover to protect vehicle from debris that can cause scratches and dents.

4. Avoid driving through flood waters as it can shut down your vehicle and put your life

and that of your passengers at risk. Besides, it can cause severe damage to your engine, electrical systems, and other critical components, leading to costly repairs. Floodwaters can be deceptively deep and hide hazards, such as debris and potholes. It is important to note that one to two feet of water can carry away most vehicles, including SUVs. If you encounter a flooded road, turn around and find an alternate route.  If you cannot turn around or if your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and move to higher ground.

5. Keep your insurance up to date to avoid significant financial burdens in the aftermath of hurricane damage. A comprehensive insurance, rather than third-party, provides you with complete protection.

During this hurricane season, ensure you take the time to properly secure your vehicle which can make a significant difference in minimising damage and ensuring its safety.
