As we welcome 2025, it is the perfect time to reflect on how we can contribute to safer roads.
Statistics from the Road Safety Unit of the Island Traffic Authority are encouraging. For 2024, a total of 364 fatalities were recorded, which is 61 less than the previous year. This decline represents progress in achieving a safer driving culture. Despite this achievement, we must not lose sight of the fact that every life lost on our roads is one too many.
As motorists, you have a critical responsibility to protect your life, your passengers’ lives, and the lives of those you share the road with. This year presents an opportunity to aim for an even greater reduction in fatalities by exercising caution and driving responsibly.
Here are six actions motorists should resolve to take to further reduce fatalities on our roads:
Speeding and aggressive driving are among the leading causes of crashes. Commit to driving within the speed limits and staying calm, even in traffic jams or stressful situations. Being patient allows you to make better decisions and reduce the risk of accidents, making the road safer for everyone.
Make it a habit to keep your phone out of reach while driving. If you need to use it for navigation, set it up before starting your journey. Remember, no text, call, or notification is worth risking lives.
A well-maintained vehicle is a safe vehicle. Resolve to schedule regular check-ups for your tyres, brakes, lights, and fluids. Proper maintenance ensures your vehicle runs efficiently and reduces the risk of unexpected breakdowns or malfunctions that could lead to accidents.
This simple action can save lives. Vow to buckle up every time you are in the car, no matter how short the trip is, and encourage your passengers to do the same. Seatbelts are your first line of defence in the event of an accident.
Share the road responsibly. Yield to pedestrians at pedestrian crossings, give cyclists adequate space when passing, and always be vigilant in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. Being mindful of vulnerable road users, such as children and the elderly, is a simple way to prevent accidents.
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal, but also life-threatening. If you plan to drink, arrange alternative transportation or designate a sober driver.
Small efforts can make a big difference. By encouraging friends and family to follow your good example, you can play a part in making our roads safer for all.
Commit to these resolutions and stick to them to further reduce accidents and save lives.
Happy New Year! Drive safely!
